We have entered a new season of Get Messy - Nature.

I love this theme and have so many ideas already!!!

But first, this initial week. We were prompted to look to animals who inspire us in nature. Naturally, mine is a fox - my spirit animal. I focused on the movement and colour of foxes, their fluffy tails and sprightly jumping to create this series that I am a little bit in love with...

GET MESSY 2017 | NATURE WEEK 1

COLOR BLAST | ORANGE - FULL CIRCLE!

November was the fourth month of my portrait project and I am happily working my way through my list. Each week I try and think about where I am or what is happening in the world and my life - to suit each image to the current climate. This means that there will for sure be some festive entries in December!

You can follow my weekly progress (I post a new portrait every Sunday) on Instagram under the tag - #julias52portraits

Mirrors

I am a magpie when it comes to shiny things. Mirrors especially. I wouldn't say I am overly vain, but instead, just completely fascinated with how I appear to everyone else other than myself. The fact that you never can see yourself how others see you perplexes me and when I am talking to you but looking at my reflection, this is what I am trying to see! My mum and husband both won't have conversations with me near windows or mirrors because I just stare at myself. Lost in an otherworldly trance of what I look like when animated. It's a weird personality trait and I'm trying to get better at managing it… no one wants to be self obsessed but I can't quite keep the curiosity at bay...!

Me Time

I use creating art as purely selfish me time. Where I can just be doing what I enjoy the most - making a mess, playing with colour and splattering ink. Before I started this almost daily practice of art I yearned for more creative time. It has slowly become how I process my emotions and where I am always happy. Always creating. Always myself.

Grandparents

Here is my happy place. With my beloved grandparents. I know how lucky I am to have them both still here at the age of 29 and I try to cherish every moment with them. They have always been my favourite people, ever since I was small and it is here in between them between them both that is my happiest place on earth

Animal Rights

I was raised in a household that only used cruelty free products, supported animal rights charities and exclusively bought free range. I have taken up the same practices in my adult life and certainly have my vegetarian mum to thank for a lot of it. Never sugarcoating anything to me, I grew up knowing the details of animal testing for cosmetics, the violent use of fur and feathers in commercial goods, the inhumane keeping of battery farmed animals and how a lot of cats and dogs are bred for the pet market. My love for all living creatures is a massive part of my life and belief system. I hate to see any animal suffering - cute or not and can’t understand how we still have so many barbaric practices in our country and world today. I proudly wear fake fur, use cruelty free cosmetics, donate to the WWF, don’t eat meat and fully support the #adoptdontshop movement. If you are interested in any of the points I referenced for this weeks portrait, I would suggest the following documentaries: Carnage, Blackfish and Vegucated

52 PORTRAITS | NOVEMBER

When I got back from Japan at the end of October, I set myself a new creative intention - actually my first ever.

I wanted to explore abstract art. Ever since then, i have created small abstract pieces every week and I am currently trying to figure out how I can grow them in scale and size.

This week, all my pieces started from a new set of neon sharpies that I got. I then layered on felt tips, oil pastel, watercolour and finally ink.

This has been my sequential method of creating and I love that even though I am repeating the same recipe over and over... I am getting new results every time!

Firework - Orange

Bloom - Pink

Static - Yellow

ABSTRACTS | 07

Today I am sharing with you another amazing class from Get Messy

Painting Galaxies is created by my friend and fellow Zine Squad member Katie Smith. Katie has a wonderful skill in creating intergalactic sky-scapes with her art tools and created this course, in conjunction with Get Messy to teach us mortals how to conjure up similar effects. I took the moons and abstracts lessons this weekend, to give you a flavour for what you can make from this course

It will be of no surprise to those of you who are familiar with my work, that I was in love with the abstract galaxies concept and lesson. Swirling paint around on wet paper to mimic outer space?

Yes please!

I created these galaxies using a mix of ink, watercolour and bleach

Paper quality is super important when creating pieces like this, as a damp page will help you get the swirly magical goodness. I used my Bluesky Papers journal for the abstracts and this watercolour paper from Daler and Rowney for the moons

Creating the moons was so much fun, I love the mix of results you get from just using the same technique, every time you apply pigment to water it will take differently

I layered the moons in my abstract galaxies

You can explore Painting Galaxies with Katie and Get Messy by signing up to the course here

It is actually on sale right now as part of black Friday BUT ENDS TONIGHT (27.11.17) !!!!!
