GET MESSY 2016 | WEEK 21

This week I was in Montenegro, having what felt was a well needed rest! I took my mini 100 days of felt tips journal but not a larger one for get messy work. I instead, used the June issue of Elle as my journal. Working like this in magazines is my default style and although I didn't produce much, I really enjoyed these little sketchy moments during my holiday! I also couldn't resist a little Photoshop additions once I got back...

Next week we're back to actual get messy prompts, with our new season! I'm also moving house, so it'll be an interesting week for me (!)

Get Messy Art Journal is an art journaling program/community. We are a group of like minded art journalers who have come together under this art form to learn, share, practice our skills and push past our creative limits with hopes to inspire. Our community values consistent creating, encouragement and support and trying new things. We would love to have you jin us as a member of Get Messy Art Journal. Join Get Messy now! "

COLOR CHAOS | RED

Eugh. This journal was the toughest for me. I knew red would be a challenge because I hardly use it in my artwork - which is odd because I have red hair and wear a lot of red clothing. I was hoarding the journal for a good few weeks before I attempted anything and I only started because the deadline to send it off was approaching rapidly! This push helped me though, otherwise I would of kept politely ignoring it forever. Once I got going in the journal, it wasn't as difficult as I had anticipated but, as you will see from the images below, I rarely finished a page. The red journal is now off to Vanessa who can hopefully help some of my pages out!

Color Chaos is a collaborative project involving me and 6 other art journallers. The participants are:

 Lauren
Karen
Sharon

We each started a journal in a specific colour and it gets sent around the world to each participant to continue that colour theme. My own journal is black and this red one is Sharon's.

GET MESSY 2016 | WEEK 20

We are in our season break for get messy and I am also moving house. This has meant my evening this week have been spent packing and organising. One thing I am not taking with me to my new home, will be my collection of magazines. I have been stashing away Vogue's and Elle's since 2008 (!) so my collection is now ridiculous. Overwhelming - also, very unnecessary. Going through them all has been a cathartic process, as I always find sorting out things in life. I am keeping any image from each magazine that I think will help me in art journalling and this weeks pages are all from these old magazines.

Hair
- collage & sharpies

My guilty pleasure is little mix, I just love that kind of crazy addictive pop music that they make and their last song has been in my head for what feels like years. This is my favourite line from it.

 Heaven is a jungle
- collage, photoshop & sharpies

I'm going on holiday in a few days and drawing / doodling / photoshopping this page has gotten me so excited for some non British nature !

 My Body
- collage, photoshop & sharpies

I have spent my week listening to ladies who lunch Podcasts (I highly recommend!) and the episode on body image I find really interesting. This page is a response to that (and other things that occur in my life, being a young woman who happens to be short and slim - sideways eyes to anyone who says I am a pixie, could live in a matchbox, relates me to a teenager etc)

 Teenage Kicks
- collage, photoshop & sharpies

A marbled wonderland, with Emma Watson as Alice.

Outside
- collage, & sharpies

Again, waiting for some real time outside! I stole this quote from Lauren because I just adore it.

GET MESSY 2016 | LISTS | WEEK 6

We've reached the end of another season! I'm really sad to see this one go, I've thoroughly enjoyed all the prompts and working in my new moleskine format. I've also nicely just hit the middle of that journal and can't wait to fill the rest with our next season.. !

This week we actually had sunshine in the U.K so I have abandoned my usual scanned pages for outside photographs.. with extra help from a little fluffy thing too.

26. Currently Watching
- pen, highlighter & washi

I have started to dip into the craft swap goodies sent to me from Jessica - it was colour themed and she chose pink for me. There was a ridiculous amount of epherma and tea (TEA! actual tea! I still can't get over that, tea is one of my most favourite things) that Jessica put into my swap parcel. These washi's are super cute and playful and perfect for this page. I dedicated my current watchlist to these shows I watched whilst in America last week for work. I was very tired for my whole trip and these shows were perfect down time, lazy, binge watching material.

27 & 28 Home, Permission
- collage, washi, pen & acrylic

This paper bag from scribbler has done me so well, I just love the pattern! (I'm also not the only one, Lauren used it this season as well)

These two pages are simple and to the point. Home is when I'm with my loved ones and I want to be a fearless person, so I give myself permission to be just that. 100% and in orange paint!

29 & 30 Peaceful, Luxuries in life
- collage & washi

The left hand Polaroid is from my final university project. I made textiles for a little room (bedding, wallpaper, rug) and put my friend in it and took pictures of her sleeping. It was about being re-united with your lost things and I have kept all my images from the project. I wanted to put it in here as a dedication to how much I love sleeping and how grateful I am for being a good sleeper - it is a genuine skill of mine! I am most at peace whilst asleep as well as making a mess, hence all the collaged layers underneath my Polaroid. I love how the shadows from the grass fall over this page, making it really dreamlike and ethereal.

The opposite page is my luxury in life - travel. I travel a fair bit and I love to do it! To explore and experioence new things and cultures.. it's up there as a favourite pastime and something I am so fortunate to be able to do.

This is my cat Oscar, he hates art. Genuinely. He knocks over my supplies and gets unsettled when I'm doing creative things in "his" house.

I hope you've enjoyed this season and if you're not a member of get messy yet.. right now is the perfect time to join! Just click the link below... do itttttttt ;)

ZINE SQUAD | IN FAIR VERONA

At the beginning of the year, I collaborated on a Romeo and Juliet themed zine with the wonderful Karen. We loved this topic so much that it was also hijacked for a secret zine squad project!
Emily was our chosen person to zine because she is married to her childhood sweetheart and probably one of the most adorable, romantic and sweet people I know.

Cover, by Karen

Did my heart love til now
- collage, acrylic & pen

The zine was made from old book pages which was a nice change of medium for me. I created this collaged piece using acrylic as my glue because I had run out (!) and I am loving the washed out effect it gives.

When the sun came up
- ink, stencil & pen

Emily is a little Swifty fan like myself so I couldn't resist putting some sneaky Taylor lyrics in here.
This background technique of layering inks is my favourite, favourite, favourite <3

Doubt
- collage

A quick collage of all things young love, runaway and dramatic gestures..

I was the second person to work on this zine so check out everyone else's pages to see how it evolved!

GET MESSY 2016 | LISTS | WEEK 5

I am currently on a training course with work so I premade these lists and am hoping there are no issues with my scheduled post today!

Coming towards the end of the season, I can safely say that it's been my favorite so far. I don't know if that's because I was so expecting to dislike it or if it's because I've really fallen for my moleskine. Creating in a journal I really love and also, creating to the same size each week has given me a more defined focus then the way I usually make. I don't think this structure is something I could always do (I would eventually rebel and go back to my myriad of sketchbooks and scrap papers) but for this season, I've loved it.

21 & 22 Lucky, Old VS Young Me
- ink, tissue, modge podge, collage, pen & sharpies

The left is a page dedicated to my first fortune cookie given to me by my friend when I was about 16. It read "You will be succsesfull at anything you try" and never has another cookies message come close! I kept it for years and I think it was actually in a college sketchbook of mine but I have no idea if I still have it anywhere now.
The collage on the right is actually of moomin creater Tove Jansson and her grandmother. I have used it though to be the same perosn, looking at themselves from either perspective of life. I love this image and I love the concept of communicating with future or past selves.

23 & 24 Inspired, Inside Me
- collage, washi, pen, ink, bleach, sharpies

25 Quotes
- marker pen

Essentially this pinterest board, written out

ZINE SQUAD | A ZINE FOR V

The get messy zine squad is made up of three core creators (Vanessa, Katie, Myself) and for each individual zine, we invite members from the get messy art journal group to collaborate with us. Last Autumn, my co-creators Katie and Vanessa surprised me with my own woodland zine. This then led on with me and Vanessa surprising Katie with her own one around the theme of infinite possibilities and now it has all come full circle and we have zined Vanessa!

We chose to create the zine around her 52 portraits project that she curated last year (which is also available as a class from the get messy store!) making this probably the most personal zine we've worked on so far.

Skeleton
- collage, pen & washi

Vanessa is an archaeologist so human remains, bones and form come into her work a lot. i loved this portrait she did near the beginning of her 52 week project and I overlaid some images over top to create a small flip book. The words come from Vanessa as well.

P.S. I constantly had skeleton song by Kate Nash in my head when making these pages, totally underrated song IMHO.

The card on the left was added by Caylee I think, the image of V, by me.

Tigress
- collage & ink

This is my favourite image from Vanessa 52 week portraits. I love the vibrancy of the grass and the linking of the arms towards one another. I put the tigress in this collage because all women are fierce tigress's especially with their young. I love the strong, protective feline vibes from it. I also really liked the text "collectively, we've known each other for a while" I am a big believer in souls and other lives and often wonder if you are linked to your families forever in ways we can never really understand. It's that sense of knowing and belonging.

The collaborators for this zine were:

Caylee, Lauren, Torrie, Katie, & Myself
