ZINE SQUAD | HOW SHE CREATES

Today is a very exciting yet surreal day. Myself, Katie and Vanessa were interviewed by the lovely Caylee Grey for the podcast How she creates. We talk all things zine squad; how it started, what we love most about the process, how we choose our subjects and victims and what our goals are as a collective.

I enjoy the series of how she creates so much as a listener, there are times when I am listening in traffic and wish I was at my art desk because I am so inspired! It seems just crazy that I and the squad are now part of this amazing line up that has been the first series.

As part of our episode, we made a series of printable collages. These are elements from previous zines, artwork by all three of us. The idea is to inspire people to cut them up and create their own collages. This is sort of the essence of a zine, something totally unique and one off. The printables are available to everyone who subscribes to the how she creates podcasts!

Because we couldn't resist, we have each created new collages from these printables...

You can listen to our episode here, see Vanessa's collages here and Katie's here

We hope you enjoy it and are inspired to make things!

GET MESSY 2017 | HABIT | WEEK 04

For my get messy habit pages this week I am venting about the current political climate in America. Being British, we hear a lot about what is going on across the pond and I think a lot of Brits see America as "the place", the one to be like etc.

I never thought in my lifetime I would see such an advanced country like the U.S start to revoke rights for women. It's sobering, horrifying and wrong.

Art can't cure the world or really change anything, but it gives me and many others an outlet in seemingly powerless situations. These collages are my response.

GET MESSY 2017 | HABIT | WEEK 01

Since joining Get Messy in 2015, I have committed myself to weekly journalling. For most of the time, Get Messy is in seasons, where you get prompts around a certain theme every week. In between these 6 week long seasons, there is a 2 week break but I choose to continue creating during this time.

We have just finished up the season of gifts and Get Messy is gearing up for the new year with new seasons, a new creative team (which I am honored to be part of!) and a new website layout.

My pages for this week though - they were purely cathartic and I'm so happy that they look as good as they felt to make!

I was feeling very overwhelmed this week and these pages just made me feel like a weight was lifted. I am looking forward to the new new year - the year of the Rooster next week. I'm not affiliated to Chinese culture at all, I just feel like my January has been a bit rocky and am looking eagerly to another fresh beginning!

Getting lost in the details of the multi coloured stripes...

ZINE SQUAD | EMPOWERMENT

Another zine squad edition! We have been super busy and inspired the last few months and it feels like all our zines landed home around the same time. This zine was for Judith and it was all about empowerment. It has a special place in my heart, it feels like a true old-school zine. A real mix of different styles and voices all shouting the same message,
I made the base and first pages so seeing it completed as the vibrant collage is just so cool.

Original Zine Squad: Katie, Vanessa & Myself
Guest Ziner: Sarah

I left the front pages blank except my pink tag with washi and I am obsessed with Vanessa's spice girl lyrics on the back. Obsessed.

My page on the right, which Katie (I think?) added to and highlighted words.

Peep through page. I die.

My double spread. Art is so empowering and Judith is an amazing artists - this just seemed so fitting.

My swirly page on the left

Our sign off page was around this bad-ass banana gun girl. I love everything about this image - I would guess it's from an Elle magazine about 10 years ago, it's the best when my hoarding pays off!

GET MESSY 2016 | GIFTS | WEEK 6

This has been the last week of the season of gifts, I was thinking about the prompt of "your life right now as a landscape" when I created the pages below

Hearts
- collage, acrylic & ink

The hearts were from lino cuts I made for Christmas cards I made last year - it seems fitting to use them in our last gifts prompts!

Splatter
- collage, ink & photoshop

Think
- collage & photoshop

A gentle reminder to think before I speak (!!!)

See you
- collage, washi & ink

Get Messy will be back in a few weeks with a new season and new creative team that I am happy to still be part of!

I like to try and keep up with weekly pages though, even when get messy don't provide prompts so I'll be back next Friday with some more pages. I say this at the end of every get messy season, but now is really a perfect time to join!

COLOR BLAST | ORANGE

Last year, I participated in a group journal swap called Color Chaos. It was a really cool and fun experience... too good to not replicate in 2017! So this year, we have some new participants and some staying and we have re-named the group Color Blast.

We each have started with a small journal, chosen our colour and sent it to another member in the group. The idea is that each 4-6 weeks we work on a new colour, blog about our pages and then send the journal on. At then end, we will receive our original colour journal back, filled with bespoke art from the group!

Color Blast 2017:

Julia - Orange
Vanessa - Grey
Lauren Brown - Green
Lauren Blood - Purple
Moriah - Crimson
Sarah - Mint
Riet - Yellow

Today I'm sharing my orange journal, how it looked before it set sail to Vanessa and Beijing...

I made my pages a mix of near or actually finished and unfinished.. I love to see how other people interpret each page and what they choose to add. See you on the other side orange journal!

ZINE SQUAD | TROPICAL JUNGLE

This zine was made by me so I was the first person to create pages and only saw the finished article through scans. I really love it's vibrancy and colourfulness, perfect for Melody who the zine was created for.

Original Zine Squad: Katie, Vanessa & Myself
Guest Ziner: Moriah

I just went crazy with the gouache for the front and back cover !

My page on the right - Lana Del Ray lyrics

The rest of my pages all used tombows - they have such intense colour! I love the added feather on this spread

We always create a sign-off page so our victim knows who collaborated on their zine.

GET MESSY 2016 | GIFTS | WEEK 5

We are nearing the end of the season of gifts with get messy. It's been a weird season for me, I feel like I've always been distracted and not really willing to put myself into my art. I don't want to force anything but I tried to be a bit more free this week, to go back to doing what I love and what feels natural to me when confronted with a blank page. I was inspired by Katie Licht's collages and some of my old mood boards from work.

We were prompted to think about what we as individuals bring to the world this week, and I think my pages reflect that entirely.

Every Detail
- collage, acrylic & tombows

This is one of my new years resolutions, to try and be more detailed and focused. Less darting around and more thorough. It's not in my nature so is something I have to actually concentrate on. Smudging paint around a page like this makes me feel ALIVE. I live for it.

I think I can
- collage, ink & sharpie

This was a real back to basics style for me. I feel entirely at home creating like this and I love this page so much. It speaks to me and represents me, right now.

Extraordinary
- collage, ink & sharpie

I've always been a little off beat - at school my nickname was peculiar Julia (!!) I have always embraced this oddness and I like to think it's my biggest attribute.

ZINE SQUAD | STRONG

Another zine squad edition! I am an uber fan of Elizabeth; her writing style, fitness enthusiasm and her dog Clark (seriously, check him out). Elizabeth is joining the Get Messy creative team in 2017 and I'm so excited to work with her! As I was the second person to work on the zine (V made the base) I thought it'd be cool to show you the progression of my pages.

Original Zine Squad: Katie, Vanessa & Myself
Guest Ziner: Riet

The cover - made by V, red accents by me

My double spread, added to below by ???!

I left this spread intentionally quite plain and love Katie's superhero girl!
