GET MESSY 2017 | MESSY PAGES

This week Get Messy launched a new online course - messy pages.

Created by the wonderful Tanyalee, the course is all about not being afraid to make a mess in your art journal and how to tap into that inner child of freedom and play.

I had such a great time creating the pages below from the lesson on abstract backgrounds and fully intend to finish the course!

For me, it is a great class to dip in and out of; especially when you're feeling low on inspiration or wanting to try something new.

Not all of my pages that I am sharing today were techniques taught in the class - some I just did from being inspired by watching Tanaylee create. This is the one thing I love most about online classes in video format. I feel like I am working alongside a friend. I'm not directly copying or mimicking, I am going off on my own tangents and discovering new skills!

My journal mound after an afternoon with the class!

Messy Fingers

I created this ombre effect by mixing acrylic with my fingertips

The opportunity to create a pattern with my messy hands was too good to pass on!

Ever since the last get messy season - Art 101, I have become a bit besotted with mixing my paints. Something I never really did before. This palette is just perfection - I was so proud that I made that mint colour myself!

I was using an old edition of treasure island as my art journal here. The right side textures are made by pressing down my palette onto the page. On the left, I was playing with blocking colours.

Similar to one of my previous pages, Tiger, this was created by layers of acrylic paint and alternate brush strokes.

I started to play with the ombre theme again here. I added splashes of ink to get that lovely wet bleed through

This is a very simple but super effective technique of building up layers of colourful lines, again with acrylic.
This page reminds me of deckchairs and ice creams..

I hope this post has made you inspired to check this course out!

ZINE SQUAD | MIGHTY ANCESTORS

This zine is one of my favourites. I know I say that about every zine but this one... It's on another level.

We surprised Luz with the mighty ancestry zine (SUCH a cool theme, thanks V!) and worked with Jaimee as our guest artist.

Original Zine Squad: Katie, Vanessa & Myself
Guest Ziner: Jaimee

I was the second person, after Vanessa to work on the zine so have included some before images of it.
I love to see the evolution of the pages and the little touches each artists brings.

The front cover - I didn't add to this but it's so cool I had to put it in here!

Just look at that writing! And forest fern girl! I can't even.
I think both of those additions are by Katie and I love how she uses the same colours as what was already on the page.

The stitching is by Vanessa, the triangles in sharpie and the collaged elements are mine.

Perfect neon splashes!

My. Favourite. Page. EVER

And the back. that little hand by Katie is just the best.

Ah, how I wish this zine was mine to keep! ;)

ZINE SQUAD | TINY THINGS

We love to surprise people with zines and our targets are almost always get messy art journal members.

This latest zine was for Anika, someone who lives for the fine details and minimal elements of art.
Tiny things is such a cute and cool concept, it seemed perfect for her <3

Original Zine Squad: Katie, Vanessa & Myself
Guest Ziner: Sarah

As I started this zine, I like to see and show how it changed from person to person.
Below my images are of the zine when it left me and the finished article.

I love how the cover got more and more adorned as it went to various people!

I think Vanessa - or Sarah ?! countered my colour page with this black and white one

Definitely V on the right!

My favourite page of mine from the zine is this little lion surrounded by his huge mane.
Katie's illustration and bird whispering is the perfect partner.

I forgot to take a "before" picture of my page on the left - I am so in love with Katie's joining page on the right !!!!

Our last sign-off page.

I hope you enjoyed looking through this tiny thing zine, it was a really fun concept to play with and I'd like to work on more abstract themes like this in the future with my squad!

GET MESSY 2017 | ART SWAP

A few weeks ago an art swap was organised through Get Messy. Today I am sharing pages made with the things I received in this swap! My partner was Christie and she sent me a really cool selection of papers and images.

I have coincided this post with Sasha's tutorial of making a mini art journal from one sheet of paper. My journal is slightly different though... I couldn't follow the ridiculously simple instructions so made my own hacked version.

As we are in between seasons in the get messy community right now, this was a fun little project to keep up my weekly creative habit.

I loved it's tiny size and as a fan of Torrie's tiny journals, want to pursue more miniature art!

FILM NOTES | MINIMALISM (A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THE IMPORTANT THINGS)

I am starting a new series on my blog today!

Titled as "film notes" it's a place for all of my scribbles, drawings and quotes that I make when I'm watching something super inspiring. I have done this before, starting with Amelie a few years ago. I was so inspired when I saw this film that I just wanted to create alongside it!

I created alongside the Netflix documentary Minimalism for my first installment. This was a really interesting film, about living with less, the path to true happiness and how we are dictated by corporations on what will make us feel satisfied and fulfilled. I 10000% recommend it and challenge you not to have a clear out afterwards! ;)

I am very excited about this new series and have a few ideas about what films and shows to feature.
Please comment with any that you would find particularly interesting or think would be inspiring for me!

ZINE SQUAD | IT'S A SMALL WORLD

Today I am sharing with you one of my favorite zine squad editions - I feel like every time we create a new one I say that!
The theme for this zine was "it's a small world" and it was made for the ridiculously talented Sasha

Original Zine Squad: Katie, Vanessa & Myself
Guest Ziner: Tanyalee

I was last to receive the zine (my favorite position to be in!) so I think the cover is a collaborative effort.
I added the washi, which in true collab style was actually a little gift from Katie.

My inky world with a quote to live by

The tiger on the left is from me

My stencilled page on the right

My cityscape inspired page on the left.
As a child growing up in the countryside, I always dreamed of living and exploring cities.

Our standard sign off page!

Make sure you visit everybody else's blog today to see the full zine :)
