ZINE SQUAD | TINY THINGS

We love to surprise people with zines and our targets are almost always get messy art journal members.

This latest zine was for Anika, someone who lives for the fine details and minimal elements of art.
Tiny things is such a cute and cool concept, it seemed perfect for her <3

Original Zine Squad: Katie, Vanessa & Myself
Guest Ziner: Sarah

As I started this zine, I like to see and show how it changed from person to person.
Below my images are of the zine when it left me and the finished article.

I love how the cover got more and more adorned as it went to various people!

I think Vanessa - or Sarah ?! countered my colour page with this black and white one

Definitely V on the right!

My favourite page of mine from the zine is this little lion surrounded by his huge mane.
Katie's illustration and bird whispering is the perfect partner.

I forgot to take a "before" picture of my page on the left - I am so in love with Katie's joining page on the right !!!!

Our last sign-off page.

I hope you enjoyed looking through this tiny thing zine, it was a really fun concept to play with and I'd like to work on more abstract themes like this in the future with my squad!

GET MESSY 2017 | ART SWAP

A few weeks ago an art swap was organised through Get Messy. Today I am sharing pages made with the things I received in this swap! My partner was Christie and she sent me a really cool selection of papers and images.

I have coincided this post with Sasha's tutorial of making a mini art journal from one sheet of paper. My journal is slightly different though... I couldn't follow the ridiculously simple instructions so made my own hacked version.

As we are in between seasons in the get messy community right now, this was a fun little project to keep up my weekly creative habit.

I loved it's tiny size and as a fan of Torrie's tiny journals, want to pursue more miniature art!

FILM NOTES | MINIMALISM (A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THE IMPORTANT THINGS)

I am starting a new series on my blog today!

Titled as "film notes" it's a place for all of my scribbles, drawings and quotes that I make when I'm watching something super inspiring. I have done this before, starting with Amelie a few years ago. I was so inspired when I saw this film that I just wanted to create alongside it!

I created alongside the Netflix documentary Minimalism for my first installment. This was a really interesting film, about living with less, the path to true happiness and how we are dictated by corporations on what will make us feel satisfied and fulfilled. I 10000% recommend it and challenge you not to have a clear out afterwards! ;)

I am very excited about this new series and have a few ideas about what films and shows to feature.
Please comment with any that you would find particularly interesting or think would be inspiring for me!

ZINE SQUAD | IT'S A SMALL WORLD

Today I am sharing with you one of my favorite zine squad editions - I feel like every time we create a new one I say that!
The theme for this zine was "it's a small world" and it was made for the ridiculously talented Sasha

Original Zine Squad: Katie, Vanessa & Myself
Guest Ziner: Tanyalee

I was last to receive the zine (my favorite position to be in!) so I think the cover is a collaborative effort.
I added the washi, which in true collab style was actually a little gift from Katie.

My inky world with a quote to live by

The tiger on the left is from me

My stencilled page on the right

My cityscape inspired page on the left.
As a child growing up in the countryside, I always dreamed of living and exploring cities.

GET MESSY 2017 | ART 101 | WEEK 6

In our final week of art 101, we have been focusing on collage.
This is one of my all time favorite techniques and I loved creating these simple ephemera pairings.

As always, I'll be creating during the get messy two week season hiatus so will back here next week to share more of my art journal adventures!

COLOR BLAST | GREY

Today I am sharing with you my pages for the grey journal. This is Vanessa's colour for the 2017 edition of color blast. It was a fun and challenging colour, certainly not one I gravitate to naturally, I am more black and white or full on rainbow!

Pushing creative boundaries like this though is one of my favourite things about collaborative journalling.

Color Blast 2017:

Julia - Orange
Vanessa - Grey
Lauren Brown - Green
Lauren Blood - Purple
Moriah - Crimson
Sarah - Mint
Riet - Yellow

The cover, made by Vanessa

My first double spread, I had to put some feminist notions in here for V <3

My page on the right - an inky response to the page on the left

Playing with textures

I added the collaged pieces of fashion illustrations

The balloon man is mine and the washi was there already. I can't wait to see the further evolution of this page!

My favourite grey is sharpie silver!

GET MESSY 2017 | ART 101 | WEEK 5

This week I followed Elizabeth's tutorial on drawing. Elizabeth's blog and writing style is one of my most favorite so I felt fully enthused to try her various techniques. I also felt empowered by her sentiment that drawing is just a bunch of shapes and we can all make shapes - right?!

I don't like this page but I wanted to put all my drawing experiments into one real "sketchbook" page.
Trying out ideas, playing and seeing what does and doesn't work for me.

The bottom corner is drawn with my left hand - I am in love with the naive lettering!

My favorite piece I made this week. Swirly and abstract - this is my comfort zone!

Also - I am still continuously building layers on this piece. It's from a tutorial that Pam shared on the Get Messy blog that I am trying really hard to push myself to do. Hopefully it'll be finished (and not in the bin) by the end of the season... which is next week!

I am taking part again in the 100 day project this year and have chosen #100daysoftryingtodraw as my challenge.
So get used to seeing more weird versions of real things from me in the coming months!

ZINE SQUAD | MAGICAL MOTHERHOOD

Our latest zine offering was for the super sweet and strong Rosie. Our theme was magical motherhood and the zine ending up being just beautiful!

It was a difficult one for me to work on as I am not a mother myself and I know a few friends and loved ones who have lost their Mum's. My own Mum had cancer in recent years as well so it there was a lot swirling around my mind! I was trying to tap into these feelings when I was making.

Original Zine Squad: Katie, Vanessa & Myself
Guest Ziner: Elly

This page is obviously by Katie (and surely belongs in a children's book?!), but I added the letters. I found this quote and thought it summed up where Rosie and her little girl are at the moment.

This was my first thought when my Mum was diagnosed with cancer and something I knew I wanted to put into the zine. Back to those swirling thoughts as well, expressed through ink.

I think this is Vanessa's page on the left, my compliment to it on the right. I loved this childlike and fun collage. I used lyrics from Taylor Swift here as well as in the last page below!

Our sign off sheet and my last T Swift inspired bit of collage!

These unicorns were on the back cover when the zine arrived with me. I coloured them in and added the text, I did a bit of Instagram snooping and saw that this phrase was something special between Rosie and her daughter.

Being the last in line for the zines is my favourite, I also added a few doodles and quotes to other pages, so have a look at everyone's blogs today and you'll usually spot a little bit of me in each page ;)

And! In case you missed it, the zine squad were featured on how she creates! A podcast about women and their creative stories. I blogged about the episode here and you can listen here
