Today we are sharing a really cool zine - the elements zine made for Serena. It was a really fun theme and suits Serena perfectly.

Original Zine Squad: Katie, Vanessa & Myself
Guest Ziner: Divyam

This was a real mixture of people's styles.. I think we all added something!

My double spread. I love this quote from Taylor Swift and my neon ink suited the page perfectly. I am both a Leo and a dragon so a true twin fire sign!

Divyam's (?) page on the left, mine on the right. I was quoting from the earth goddess Pocahontas and using my felt tips to create multi coloured watery waves. I love that Divyam / Katie (?) on the left carried on my Pocahontas theme!

My page on the left, Katie's on the right. I wanted to add a little more to her "deep into the earth" quote

ZINE SQUAD | ELEMENTS

Hi.

I am off to Japan for a few weeks and am taking this time as a reset and re boot for my creative self.

I had originally had planned to schedule and prepare blog posts for when I was away... but realised that I was working in a way I wasn't happy with to make this a reality. Pushing and forcing pages when I didn't feel like it (important sometimes but also damaging), working in a way that was too much like working. As I have become more and more involved in art journalling and creativity in my spare time I have un-intentionally turned it into a some what second career. This is a happy and amazing thing for me - to create and play alongside an encouraging and motivating community  but it can also be overwhelming and time consuming. I want to re-adjust my focus; what do I want to create.. really want to create. How can I push myself further?

Any ideas or thoughts on this, please leave me a comment!

Whilst I am away, I am not stopping my art practice at all (and there will be a few pre-scheduled posts popping up). I plan to take a few things to Japan to help me document my time there, possibly will get involved with inktober (!) and am so excited about all the stationary!

As for things I am working on when I return from my adventure that you'll see soon on this blog:

Various collab journals

Galaxies course from Get Messy

Travel journal from Barcelona (so incredibly overdue!)

Newest Get Messy season - connections

And super exciting - I have an article on my daily journaling featured in Brush magazine

This is a new magazine by the talented Tanyalee and Get Messy

I'm planning on reading my copy on the flight to Tokyo and can't wait to get into all the articles.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Lot's to look forward too, especially with a (hopefully) clearer and inspired mind ...!

OUT OF OFFICE

I'm feeling autumnal...

So many people have joined in with me for this year! Look for the tags #mydayarted and #dailymoleskine on instagram to see how my friends are documenting their 2017.

DAILY MOLESKINE 2017 | SEPTEMBER

Another month gone and preparing my portraits each Sunday evening is becoming a lovely habit.

I am really enjoying the process of setting up each shot, thinking and writing my captions and the interactions they bring from the Instagram community - #julias52portraits

September looked like this:

05/52

Women's Rights

For as long as I can remember I have been filled with an utter disbelief that some people see men as stronger, better, more valued than women. That sometimes men will be paid more for the same job, have better human rights and not constantly be victims. I remember hating the freedom my brother got over me, not only for being older but for being a less vulnerable male. I hated the stories my mum and grandma told me about sexist experiences they had encountered, and then feeling despair when similar things happened to me. I stand for women's rights because girls shouldn't have this injustice thrust onto them, all women deserve to be treated equally to men and it's not dramatic or women's issues or better than it has been - it's wrong

06/52

Breakfast

The most important meal of every day. I love breakfast food and enjoy the true decadence it brings; jam, tea, cereal, toast, pancakes, fruit….. an ideal day for me is breakfast foods for every meal. One of my happiest memories from childhood is eating jam on toast during a family holiday to France. I can't convey how important breakfast is to me and if I could have both breakfast and brunch every day I would be living my best life!

Reading

I love to read. It’s how I end almost every day and the magic of being transported into another place through your own imagination is just so much fun for me. I started when I was pretty small and had a really hard time with spelling, my mum recommended reading and really encouraged me into it. I was allowed as many books and magazines from the library as I wanted and spent hours in my room, in the garden, in the car, with my head in a book.

I know I was a bit ashamed as a child to be so passionate about reading - I hated people seeing my bookcase full of books.. why? I have no idea! Was it because no one else really read as much as I did? I thought I’d be called a geek? Who knows... but it is something I have managed to get over. I look forward to travelling because I know I can get into a book, I sometimes think I am remembering a memory but it’s actually something I read. I undoubtedly know that it did help with my spelling and I am so grateful for having bookworm parents who also handed down this hobby to me. I am slowly working my way through their Stephen King collection, coveting a beautiful hardback version of the handmaid's tale and always look forward to bedtime when I can shut off from the day, relax and read.

Nature

I was once a woodland creature (more on this in future portraits) and I feel at home here. Any woods, in any place. Surrounded by foliage, creatures and quiet, uninterrupted space.

October will bring it's own new challenges as I am away and planning on capturing my love of travel whilst there..

52 PORTRAITS | SEPTEMBER

Today I am sharing with you my second to last colour in the colour blast 2017 series. You can see the rest here!

Color Blast 2017:

Julia - Orange
Vanessa - Grey
Lauren Brown - Green
Lauren Blood - Purple
Moriah - Crimson
Sarah - Mint
Riet - Yellow

This is the purple journal, belonging to and started by Lauren. Purple is one of my favourite colours, I often have purple hair and find myself attracted to many purple things so I was happy to work solely with the colour.

A deceleration of my love for purple - i think it is probably my aura colour. That or some sort of berry red...

My ink splatter on the left

I played on this fun circle cut out using my tombows and paint chips from Valspar

Garden vines

Not sure who did this woman - I think maybe Sarah? But I added her pink lips, hair and expressive lines

Another Valspar paint chip addition! This time paired with collaged scraps and felt tips shapes

Felt tips and Ink stripes (learn more patterns and techniques like this in my class!)

A collection of those same scraps.

Purple is now in London with Lauren Pearl for it's final pages to be made!

Make sure to check out everyone else's posts today to check in with the other colours!
