GET MESSY 2017 | COLOUR | WEEK 4

This week has been totally Get Messy-centric for me.

After the release of my class, Pen + Ink I have been taking over the Get Messy Instagram account!

This is part of the Creative Teams summer takeover and I am really enjoying my time looking after it. I am even planning an Instagram live this weekend so let me know what you would like to see! I was thinking of a live make-along and answering any creative or class questions.

I created all my pages for this week on the Get Messy Instagram account stories. Sharing sneak peeks and process shots, they'll still be there for a limited time if you want to see how these pages came about and my process for creating in my art journal.

They grow in my imagination
- felt tips, watercolour

I was thinking about a classic jungle scene but re-imagining the colours. So no green at all!

Tools of the page!

Forget That
- watercolour, sharpie

Drawing inspiration from colours I saw out of my attic window.

A pair of pages, that work either way together

You're Cool
- sharpie, washi tape, ink

I Like You
- sharpie, collage, ink

Lovely inky swirls

ART JOURNAL | COLLAB WITH KATE VOLYANSKAYA

At the beginning of this year, Kate and I worked on a collaborative art journal. I was so happy to embark on this joint journal as I have been obsessing over Kate's abstract style for years now. She is one of my favourite Get Messy artists and never fails to inspire me.

Kate started the journal, sent it to me and then I returned it to Kate in Russia.

Sadly though, our journal got lost/stolen/liberated somewhere between the UK and Moscow! We have decided to share the finished journal anyway, even though it is MIA and Kate hasn't seen the finished thing!

I made my pages after just watching La La Land so they are inspired by that.

In particular, this one quote:

"Here's to the ones who dream, foolish as it may seem
Here's to the hearts that ache
here's to the mess we make"

I added the text and collage on the left

Double spread by me

Again, I added the text over Kate's double spread

Kate's line drawings, my text

My double spread

My double spread, working on top of a pink inky page by Kate

It was a really cool little collab and I hope you'll join me in willing it safely back to Kate at some point in the future!

GET MESSY 2017 | COLOUR | WEEK 3

I am seriously loving this season so much!

Any excuse to get my rainbow soul out there and onto a page!

Soft is strong
- felt tips, washi tape, collage

I wrote one of the prompts this week, to think about colours that are non-bright. I hated it, I didn't want it in my technicolor season that is evolving! This was the last page I made and layering my pastel highlighters actually gave me this strong pattern which is awesome. So a note to myself - sometimes soft can be strong. Remember that.

Always bright
- oil pastel felt tip, ink

Back in my blue sky journal! I wanted to represent a firework of colour using mixed media tools and I'm super happy with the outcome.

I think I could make so many patterns from these two pages.. !

One in every colour
- ink, felt tips, collage

Our guest artist for this season is Katie Licht, her artwork is a collage dream and inspired this (my favourite from this week) page.

I added in some interactive elements. A new thing for me that could easily become a common thing for me!

Lastly, we were prompted to think of a world without colours. Aka, not a great place. My main concern when thinking about this non-existent world would be how to express yourself? Colour is so communicative and emotional... would we use shape instead?

I made all of my pages in a Thursday night flurry. I was in a pretty ecstatic mood which I think comes across in my art! My reason for being so excited was that this week my class Pen + Ink was released on the Get Messy site. It's a big accomplishment for me and the result of a lot of learning and love. Check out my post here all about it!

GET MESSY 2017 | PEN + INK CLASS

For the past few months I have been beavering away working on something very special with Get Messy Art Journal

Over the past few years or so, Get Messy has teamed up with some wonderful artists to create classes and courses all about creativity. I am very honoured to be sat in such wonderful company and lucky enough to trial some of them as well (messy pages, totems, scrap collage).

Get Messy has been pivotal in my role of art journaller (I hadn't even heard the word before joining the programme!) and I am so happy to be joining forces with them in this venture.

Pens (felt tips) and inks are my favourite materials to work with. I love to use them together too, they may seem super basic but the effects they can give you are just beautiful.

This course is all about tapping into your childlike creativity, wonder and exploration. You'll also learn about each medium but if I had to give the class one main feature and emphasis it would be play!

If you are interested at all about pushing your creative boundaries and entering this technicolor world of pen and ink, please check out the class here and get started on your new adventure into inky, layered goodness!

ZINE SQUAD | CIRCLE

The Zine Squad have been having a bit of a summer hiatus. The last zine I shared with you all was back in April! Summer breaks and vacations will do that though.

Like flowers, we are starting to see some of our spring-time zines come into fruition and either reach their chosen owners whom they were created for, or the last few artists in the collaboration.

This post is dedicated to the circle zine, created for Clare.

It was an interesting theme that I thought of and managed to convince the other members in the squad to try out (!) I feel as the amount of zines we are creating gets higher, we are becoming more confident to push the theme boundaries or open them up to interpretation. That's what I loved about circles as a theme; it's so wide and varied and interesting to see how each artist interprets it.

Original Zine Squad: Katie, Vanessa & Myself
Guest Ziner: Ashley

I was the first person to create in the zine, meaning that i created the base and got to see it evolve each time someone new received it. I left the cover blank and loved watching it evolve!

Inspired by this Ellie Goulding song. Someone added the gold details which I love!

A power positivity quote

Again, the evolution from just my sign off and an empty page...

To a complete zine and everyone's names!

GET MESSY 2017 | COLOUR | WEEK 2

Week 2 of the season of colour! This week I was creating pages with two of my all time favourite mediums; ink and digital.

Berries
- ink, oil pastel, pen

Exploring my favourite colour(s). I have always struggled with the notion of favourites. I tend to love something then discard. Or happily switch up how I'm feeling on any given day. Purples, pinks and berry type colours I am always drawn to though. As well as black and yellow. But the challenge here was to just choose and use one!

Line, Dot
- sharpie, oil pastel, ink

Thinking about people in my life and colours I associate with them. I also pushed this into pattern as well. This was my favourite art excersie I have done in a long time! I had a bit of a revelation here as well, see how my first two people clash?! This is representitive in real life and fascinated me how it came out in the artform as well.

No flowers grow
- collage, photoshop

Never one to stay within set guidelines.. .this is my take on mixing monochrome with one colour. I got a little carried away and added a rainbow it seems!

GET MESSY 2017 | COLOUR | WEEK 1

As I mentioned in my previous post, we are starting a new season in the Get Messy Art Journal Community - The Season of COLOUR!

As a real rainbow kind of artist, I am so excited !!!

More is More!
- felt tips, watercolour, ink, acrylic paint

Responding to Iris Apfels' famous quote. That lady is seriously my icon! I recently watched a documentary about her life that I documented here and I couldn't of been more inspired!

Red
- felt tips, ink, watercolour, pen, collage

Thinking about how emotions can manifest themselves through colour and using my fave, Taylor Swift to illustrate this.

What can you create?
- felt tips, ink, collage

I made this spread after watching Vanessa's video tutorial (this is actually a quote from it!).
Again, the subject being finding your current self through colour. How to show yourself, right now, in the spectrum.

I felt like blue and orange were the perfect contrasts to reflect my recent feelings of torn joy. I spoke about this in my recent daily moleskine post too - that feeling of one thing going great to only be counteracted by something not so great a few days later. It can make me feel unsettled but also quite determined!

I'm finally using my bluesky papers sketchbook !!!!
